CUPPING
What Is CUPPING?
Cupping is an ancient form of bodywork that has been used all over the world. It has been recorded as being used in China to treat many different conditions as early as 1,000 B.C. The Egyptians used it for aiding fever, pain, and vertigo. Cupping therapy was also used by the medical profession in the 18th and 19th century throughout Europe. Research papers produced by the former Soviet Union and China verifying the benefits of suction cup therapy are still used in Chinese universities, hospitals and clinics to this day.
Through the suction, or negative pressure created through cupping, muscle tension can decrease. The mild use of suction can also improve the natural flow of the lymphatic system, helping the body rid itself of stagnant fluid and toxins. Those who have had chronic pain, and/or decreased movement, due to repetitive motion and body mechanics have seen great results after having just one single cupping session.
Cupping therapy has a direct effect on the fascia that surrounds your muscle tissue. This is very helpful as it is not always the muscle that is causing the restriction of movement in the body. Having this treatment is like having many treatments in one, as it can address so many conditions.

You are always welcome, if you prefer less or more throughout your session, to let your therapist know. Certain areas of the body may be more sensitive than others, in such cases, less suction can be used.

How Will I Feel When Receiving A Cupping Session?
The suction on the skin while lifting the skin away from the body can create a unique sensation.
As every body is unique, the sensation can be quite different from one person to the next. Some experience a deep feeling of relaxation, and others can feel energized. Some side effects may include a warming sensation over the worked area, or even dizziness.

What does it look like?
Here are some of our own clients that were willing to share their photos of before and after having cupping done.

Cupping was used to help relieve low back tension due to having back surgery years ago that has created quite a bit of scar tissue built up.
Notice the depth of the scar on the right is reduced, and the swelling of the tissue in the mid back has also gone down.
The back is straighter and the left shoulder has dropped away from the ear.

Client came in after having the worse sciatic pain they have ever experienced. They previously had seen a chiropractor and a physical therapist, after which tingling began to go down the leg.
Notice the lower spine, and hips are off-center in the left photo before the cupping treatment, and in the right photo the spine has straightened out. Inflammation throughout the torso has also diminished.
We specifically treated both legs, and hips as well as the back to help release the fascia and tension in the tissue.

What Do I need To Know Before Getting Cupped?
- Cupping can leave marks. Sometimes the marks look like bruises, but they are not. The color can vary from a light pink to a dark purple. To learn a little more on the reasons why cupping may leave marks, and what it means, here is an article from the International Cupping & Therapy Association
- You SHOULD NOT receive cupping if you: have broken bones, are getting treatments for cancer, have organ failure/illness, hernias, slipped discs, varicosities, dislocations, or are still in your first trimester of pregnancy. If you are seeing a doctor for any other conditions it is best to ask them if cupping would be a beneficial treatment for you.
- Communication is key to an enjoyable, beneficial cupping experience. As in massage therapy, you need to let your therapist know what amount of pressure (negative pressure with cupping) feels most comfortable. Some areas of your body may be more sensitive than others.
- After your session, your want to wait anywhere form 4-6 hours before taking a warm shower, or bath. You also need to avoid extreme conditions of both hot and cold temperatures, and strenuous exercise.
